Apostle spoon (possibly St James the Greater)

Silver

Origin: London

Date: 1552-1553

17.7 cm length, 55 g weight

Marks/Maker: London, sterling standard, 1552-3, maker's mark, a crescent enclosing a mullet, possibly for Nicholas Bartholomew

Bequeathed by A.T. Carter, 1947; WA1947.78.1

T. Schroder (2009), no. 322

The loss of the upper part of the saint's attribute makes it impossible to identify him. However, this well-executed figure is unique to the Museum's collection. The maker's mark has been noted with variations from between 1551 to 1633, suggesting that it was passed to an apprentice, which in the case of Nicholas Bartholomew would be Patrick Brue.

Information derived from T. Schroder, British and Continental Gold and Silver in the Ashmolean (2009)
